Biography: Michael, a native of Danville, brings to Clement & Wheatley a variety of experiences in science and healthcare. Michael completed pre-med studies at the University of Virginia, with a focus on neuroscience. Before entering law school at the University of Richmond, Michael was a visiting baccalaureate scholar at the Humanities Division of the U.Va. School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and a research assistant in the Gastroenterology/Internal Medicine Department of the U.Va. Health Sciences Center. During law school, Michael worked as an intern at the University of Richmond Mental Disabilities Law Clinic and as an extern at the Medical Society of Virginia. Michael formerly worked as an associate in the North Carolina based law firm of Womble Carlyle, where he was a member of its healthcare practice group.
Michael currently serves as a member and officer of the Health Law Council of the Virginia Bar Association, whose activities include community service projects, legislative initiatives, continuing education programs, and publications. For many years, he served on the Institutional Review Committee at Danville Regional Medical Center, which reviews medical research conducted in the Danville area, and the Danville Regional Medical Center School of Health Advisory Committee.
In the past, Michael has served on the Board of Directors of the Free Clinic of Danville, which provides free medical care to the indigent population in the Danville area, and has been general counsel to the Foundation of the Southwest Virginia Association of Philippine Physicians and the Association of Philippine Physicians in America Auxiliary. In 1996, the Association of Philippine Physicians in America presented Michael with the Leader of Tomorrow award in Chicago.
In addition to activities in healthcare field, Michael has been active in other civic and community activities, including Sacred Heart Church, Leadership Southside, and the Danville Rotary Club as one of its directors. He currently serves on the Board of Associates of The Future of the Piedmont Foundation. Appointed by the Virginia Supreme Court, Michael also serves on Bar Council, the governing body of the Virginia State Bar, and in 2007, was elected to its Executive Committee.
