City of Danville

In 1988, the City of Danville annexed an area of approximately 27 square miles which has been a stimulus to continued industrial development. Large industrial plants located in the Greater Danville Area include Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Owens-Brockway Glass Company, Corning Glass Company, Nestle, Diebold, Intertape Polymer, Essel Propack, Swedwood Danville LLC (IKEA’s furniture manufacturing subsidiary), and several others.

Danville has access to a well-developed healthcare community, having medical and hospital facilities which exceed those usually found in cities similar in size - including the Open Heart Surgery Center of Danville Regional Medical Center.

Along with Averett University and Danville Community College, the city is home to the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History, the Estelle H. Womack Museum of Natural History and the Danville Science Center (the only satellite of the Science Museum of Virginia). In addition, Danville hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year, including the Arts and Humanities series, the Danville Concert series, Festival in the Park and River City Strut, all of which bring national performers to our city.

Danville's Community Market at the Crossing at the Dan opens its doors April through November where local farmers sell their produce. The Crossing at the Dan is also a place to enjoy live music in the spring, summer and fall and where the picturesque Riverwalk trail begins. Cyclists, runners, rollerbladers and walkers can enjoy the beauty of the river. The Riverwalk is one of Virginia's Rails to Trails projects.

Danville is the home to the Danville Braves minor league baseball team and allows for easy access to various sports and recreation activities, including Durham Bulls baseball, Hyco Lake, Smith Mountain Lake, Wintergreen Resort and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are numerous public and private golf courses and tennis courts, as well as clubs devoted to camping, skiing and other athletic activities. The City's Park and Recreation Division sponsors soccer, basketball and other league play, and organizes canoeing, hiking and biking trips in and around town.

The desire to be well connected is satisfied by a number of available ISPs, including high-speed cable modem service. The community's E-Dan project is well on its way to making many local services available on-line. The Institute for Advanced Learning & Research has developed and attracted technology and talent critical to the Southside Virginia's economic transformation through advanced learning, strategic research and technology transfer, conference center activities, outreach programs, and technology infrastructure development.

If Danville is not enough, the community is located advantageously to other areas of attraction. The city is within about an hour's drive to Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest University. Danville is also readily accessible to Greensboro, North Carolina, and the North Carolina Research Triangle Park.

Danville is consistently highly ranked as one of Virginia's best cities in which to live and work because of the character of the community, its low cost of living, its low crime rate, the numerous activities available, and its close proximity to a number of major cities. In fact, Money Magazine has ranked Danville as the 12th best Small Area in the South for Quality of Life!
